Sydney’s wet season arrives reliably in May and runs through to September. The heaviest monthly rainfall typically falls in June and July. If your gutters aren’t ready before that window opens, you’re managing a problem during the rain rather than preventing it beforehand.

Here’s a practical pre-storm checklist for Sydney homeowners, covering everything your gutter and drainage system needs before May.

Step 1: Clear All Gutter Channels of Debris

The most fundamental step. All debris, leaves, bark, seed pods, and sediment should be removed from every gutter channel on the property before the wet season begins. This includes:

  • All front, rear, and side gutters
  • Valley gutters where two roof slopes meet
  • Concealed valley gutters between terrace properties
  • Any gutter sections above lower-roof additions or pergolas

If it’s been more than six months since the last clean, don’t skip this step. The autumn leaf drop from liquidambars, maples, and plane trees adds significantly to the debris load between March and May. Cleaning in April captures that autumn drop and sets you up for the winter rain.

Step 2: Flush Every Downpipe

A clear gutter that connects to a blocked downpipe is useless in a downpour. Every downpipe on the property should be flushed with water to confirm clear flow from the gutter outlet down to the stormwater connection at ground level.

What a proper flush looks like: water poured into the top of the downpipe (either by hose from above or through the gutter outlet) should flow freely out at the base within a few seconds. If the flow is slow, partial, or absent, the pipe has a restriction or blockage that needs clearing before winter rain begins. As a plumber in Sydney, we clear a lot of downpipes in June that could have been done in April for a fraction of the stress and cost.

Step 3: Check Gutter Slope and Brackets

Gutters need a slight slope to drain correctly toward the downpipe. Brackets that have come loose, fascia that has shifted, or debris weight that has caused a section to sag can all result in low points in the gutter where water pools and overflows even when the channel is clear.

Walk around the property after rain (or using a hose) and observe whether water is flowing toward the downpipes or sitting in low sections. If you see pooling within the channel, a bracket adjustment or re-hang may be needed before winter. This is best done in dry weather before the rain season, not during it.

Step 4: Inspect Joins, Seals, and End Caps

Gutter sections are joined with sealant or rubber gaskets that degrade over time. An end cap (the sealed end of a gutter run) that’s cracking or lifting will let water drip directly onto the fascia and wall below. Inspect visually for:

  • Rust staining or discolouration on the wall directly below a gutter join
  • Any visible gap or crack in the sealant at a join or end cap
  • Gutter sections that visibly pull away from each other at the join point

Resealing a join is a minor repair. Catching it in April means a dry-weather repair. Discovering it in July means water is already getting into the wall and you’re resealing in the rain. Our gutter repair service in Sydney handles reseal and bracket work as part of a pre-season inspection.

Step 5: Confirm Stormwater Outlets Are Clear

The stormwater connection at the base of your downpipes is the final exit point for all roof water. A blocked stormwater pit or a crushed underground pipe will back water up through the downpipe and into the gutter even when everything above ground is clear.

Check that:

  • Stormwater grates on the property are not blocked with leaves or sediment
  • The ground around downpipe outlets drains away rather than pooling
  • No tree roots have been impacting the underground drainage (an older problem in established gardens)

Step 6: Book a Professional Check If Any of the Above Are Uncertain

If you’re not sure when the gutters were last cleaned, whether the downpipes are clear, or whether your gutter system is slope-correct, book a professional inspection in April. It’s significantly cheaper to identify and fix problems in dry weather than to respond to them during winter rain.

A complete pre-season service from Jayco Plumbing covers all of the above: full gutter clearing, downpipe flush, visual inspection of joins and brackets, and an honest verbal report on anything that needs attention before the wet season. We serve all Sydney suburbs and can usually schedule within the week in April before the pre-season rush.
